Brussels, 05/09/2013 (Agence Europe) - The members of the European Parliament committee on the environment, chaired by Matthias Groote (S&D, Germany), called on Thursday 5 September for guarantees from the European Commission regarding the long term effectiveness of reform envisaged for addressing the failings of the European carbon market. All political groups combined adopted the objective set out in the oral question to the European Commission on the state of ETS and the European carbon market in 2012.
MEPs have asked the Commission what it plans to do in order to: (1) allow the ETS to fill the role that has been entrusted to it (reducing emissions at the best cost and encouraging investment in low carbon technologies); (2) strengthen the stability of the ETS and ensure that it is compatible with the aim of reducing CO2 emissions by 2050; and (3) promote the links between the ETS and similar systems in third countries with a view to establishing a global carbon market.
The oral question was adopted at a time when the short term reform of ETS is still at a standstill and when it is necessary to await German elections on 22 September so that talks can be resumed. (AN/transl.jl)
