EXTERNAL ACTION / (ae) egypt

23/08/2013 (Agence Europe) - EEAS does not take position on Hosni Mubarak's release. On 22 August, the European External Action Service (EEAS) did not want to take a position on the release of Egypt's former president, Hosni Mubarak. “We have taken note of the decision [to release Mubarak]. Justice is running its course and we respect that”, said Sébastien Brabant, the deputy spokesperson for High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton. The previous day, UK Foreign Secretary William Hague said he wanted a “transparent and impartial” decision from the Egyptian judicial system. The leader of the S&D Group at the European Parliament, Hannes Swoboda (Austria), criticised the decision to release Mubarak from prison. Mubarak is now assigned to residence in a military hospital (see EUROPE 10905). (CG/transl.fl)
