EU strongly condemns attack on school

Brussels, 08/07/2013 (Agence Europe) - On Sunday 7 July, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton condemned in the strongest possible terms, the attack on a state school in Yobe, Nigeria (north-east of the country) on the night of Saturday to Sunday, by suspected Boko Aram Islamists, which left 42 dead, mainly schoolchildren.

“I condemn in the strongest possible terms the horrific murder by terrorists of some 30 innocent children and a teacher in a school in Mamudo town. I express my deepest sympathy to the families of the victims, and assure the people of Nigeria of my solidarity and determination to help bring security, peace and reconciliation to the North. Those responsible must be brought to justice in accordance with the law, and the rule of law re-established throughout the region”, said Ashton.

The attack, which has been attributed to Boko Haram, came against the backdrop of a major offensive by the Nigerian army against this terrorist group in three states of north-eastern Nigeria, in which a state of emergency has been declared. (AN/transl.fl)
