Brussels, 05/07/2013 (Agence Europe) - On Friday 5 July, the leader of the S&D Group at the European Parliament, Hannes Swoboda (Austria), held the EPP Group to account, in a press release, after the Hungarian parliament passed an “anti-European ” resolution. The Fidesz party indeed submitted a resolution to the Hungarian parliament by way of response to the European Parliament's Tavares report, which was adopted by MEPs in Strasbourg on Tuesday. The report - by Rui Tavares (Greens/EFA, Portugal) - listed a series of problems with Hungarian democracy. The EPP Group rejected the report. The resolution adopted in Budapest states, in particular, that the European Parliament is overstepping its powers and that Hungary does not want a Europe “where freedom is reduced, large member states abuse their powers, and where the sovereignty of nations is violated”. Swoboda said that this resolution of the Hungarian parliament was an “insult to the European Parliament” and demonstrated that Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban does not yet understand the values of the EU. Swoboda again attacked the EPP Group, asking it to clarify its position and to say what vision it had of the role of the European Parliament. (The S&D and EPP Groups are, moreover, also involved in another dispute over Bulgaria.) The European Commission has not made any specific comments on this resolution that was adopted in Budapest, but simply reiterated that the European institutions and others, like the Council of Europe, were playing their role.
