Brussels, 25/06/2013 (Agence Europe) - A number of European publishing companies and the business group Fairsearch (CEPIC, Hotmap.com, BDZV, ETTSA and Streetcom) want the European Commission to reject Google's proposed commitments to respond to the problems outlined by the Commission (see EUROPE 10617), they explained at a press conference in Brussels on Tuesday 25 June. Google has offered to label links to its own specialist search services (for hotels and restaurants, for example) and clearly separate them from competing services by highlighting them and putting them close to its own services, but the publishing companies feel they would be penalised because Google services would still stand out on the page, so they are demanding identical treatment for indexing and display for all services. Unhappy with the proposal to allow sites to refuse to display their content in Google's services (like Google News) without that affecting where they appear in the search results, the complainants want no content to be used over and above what is strictly necessary for navigation without prior consent, and they want a guarantee that Google will not be allowed to directly or indirectly penalise sites that refuse access to their content.
