George Soros joins the debate on free movement

Brussels, 06/06/2013 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 5 June, American billionaire of Hungarian origin, George Soros, was asked to join the debate that ministers of the interior will hold in Luxembourg on Friday lunchtime (and not on Thursday 6 June as mistakenly reported). The debate will be on the difficulties that Germany, Austria, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands say that they are encountering with the free movement of persons. In a letter sent to the leaders of these four countries on 28 May - Angela Merkel, Werner Faymann, David Cameron and Mark Rutte respectively - Soros warns against the criticism made by the interior ministers of these four countries - criticism particularly targeting the Roma, in his opinion. Soros - who speaks of his efforts to support the Roma - believes that the measures recommended (especially territorial bans) are counter-productive and would only strengthen the discrimination to which the Roma fall victim. Soros wants this discussion to be the chance to speak about true measures for Roma integration and social inclusion. He also wants the ministers to discuss the use of European funds going to Roma inclusion and for these funds to be used intelligently - not, for example, to build a school in a total Roma ghetto, he writes.
