European PNR finally put to plenary

Brussels, 05/06/2013 (Agence Europe) - The European PNR dossier, which was rejected at the end of April by the committee on civil liberties (LIBE) of the European Parliament (EP) by 30 votes against and 25 for, is finally to be put to the vote of next Wednesday's plenary session, according to an EP source. In any case, the Conference of the Presidents will make this decision this Thursday, the source stated. The LIBE rejected the recommendation of Timothy Kirkhope (ECR, United Kingdom) to set in place a system for the transfer of air passenger data within the member states, modelled on the system in place with the United States. They rejected it due to concerns over data protection and were not convinced that this tool would be effective against terrorism and serious crime. The EPP called at the time for the subject to be put to the plenary, a request which was challenged by other groups, such as the Greens/EFA, which described it as an attempt to circumvent the committee's vote.
