Brussels, 04/06/2013 (Agence Europe) - Although Italy has recently been accused by NGOs, notably Human Rights Watch, of having summarily repatriated unaccompanied migrant children and adult asylum seekers to Greece, a country known for having problems in its asylum system and poor reception facilities, the Valetta-based European Asylum Seekers Office (EASO) announced on Tuesday that an agreement had been reached with the Italian authorities on improving Italy's asylum system. The agreement includes EASO support until the end of 2014 in a number of different areas, such as data collection and analysis, country of origin information, the Dublin system (which provides guidelines on transferring asylum seekers from one country to another) and emergency accommodation capacity, a press release states. Italy requested this assistance last December, in an effort to prepare for the implementation of the new common asylum system and improvement in reception standards for asylum seekers. (SP/transl.fl)
