Brussels, 03/06/2013 (Agence Europe) - A dispute over the personal data of airline passengers (PNR) is expected at the EU-Russia summit, to take place in Ekaterinburg on 3 and 4 June. Russia is asking the European airlines to provide these data for EU-Russia flights as of 1 July and any refusal could lead to their being banned. President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso is expected to raise the issue at the summit. The Commission is believed to be extremely concerned about this issue, although the measure is not yet in place and the details of the system have not yet been announced (the Russian authorities have not followed up a letter dated 15 March on this subject). “The airlines may find themselves in a situation of conflict between the European legislation (Ed: on data protection) and requests on the basis of rules introduced by Russia”, the spokesperson to Commissioner Malmström has announced. In 2012, the United States negotiated similar access to passenger data. (MD/transl.fl)
