17/05/2013 (Agence Europe) - Catherine Ashton welcomes launch of campaign against domestic violence. On 16 May, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton congratulated the King Khalid Foundation on the launch of a public campaign against domestic violence, her spokesperson said in a press release. “Domestic violence is a worldwide phenomenon and the EU is ready to share its experience of addressing it”, Ashton's spokesperson stated, saying that Ashton is aware that “this sensitive issue has been the subject of public debate in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for some time”. Ashton hopes that the campaign will bring positive effects to the victims of domestic violence, her spokesperson added. The campaign, “No More Abuse”, financed by the King Khalid Foundation; is the first of its kind and was launched at the end of April. Saudi Arabia is ranked number 131 out of 134 states in terms of equality between men and women, and it is the only country where women are not allowed to drive. (CG/transl.fl)
