Brussels, 02/05/2013 (Agence Europe) - In accordance with its policy of openness, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) based in Parma (Italy) is to open its doors to the public on Saturday 4 May, from 3.00pm to 7.30pm. In so doing, this pivotal body for food safety in the EU, which is responsible for advising the European Commission by means of its scientific opinions, will kill two birds with one stone. It will celebrate the European Year of Citizens 2013 and, just a little ahead of time, also Europe Day, which is on 9 May.
During the open door day, EFSA will explain its areas of work (nutrition, animal health and welfare, plant health, and pesticides) and what has been achieved by that body over its eleven years of existence. It will also be an opportunity for the public to meet and talk to EFSA's scientific and communication experts.
Visitors may take part in a debate on the theme “Appetite for Europe”. This will provide them with an opportunity to tell local and European personalities what kind of Europe they would like to live in and what they expect of tomorrow's European Union.
After a visit to the different stands (3.00pm-3.30pm), there will be video projections on scientific subjects, interactive games for children focused on food science (3.00pm-6.30pm), followed by information sessions on assessing animal welfare in Europe, the protection of crops and plants, the risks and benefits of pesticides, and health claims on food (beginning at 3.30pm and 4.45pm respectively).
The open door day will end with a concert by the EFSA choir and Liceo Artistico “Toschi” from Parma (6.30pm-7.30pm).
