Brussels, 24/04/2013 (Agence Europe) - As of Wednesday 24 April, a new online platform will allow interested parties to consult data on fish production in the European Union, thereby increasing the transparency of the fishery and aquaculture markets, the European Commission, which is behind the project, has announced.
Prices for cod in various European countries, wholesale trout prices, the main EU tropical shrimp suppliers: the European Market Observatory for Fishery and Aquaculture Products (EUMOFA) provides information on production, prices throughout the chain of supply, imports, exports and consumer trends.
“With this modern tool we empower economic actors through accurate, real-time market information”, said European Fisheries Commissioner Maria Damanaki of Greece.
The aim is to “facilitate structural planning and decision-making”, whilst contributing to “market transparency and stability”, says the Commission. The Observatory was developed by the European Commission for economic operators, NGOs and political decision-makers.
This free-of-charge platform is updated every day, on the basis of data collected from the member states and European institutions. It is available in French, English, German and Spanish (http://ec.europa.eu/fisheries/market-observatory ). (LC/transl.fl)
