MEPs seek to rectify workers' mobility disparity

Brussels, 24/04/2013 (Agence Europe) - Gender equality is not reflected in workers' mobility. MEPs from the Parliamentary committee on women's rights (FEMM) are examining the question in a draft resolution adopted on Tuesday 25 April.

The picture appears quite simple: although four out of ten men change jobs, less than one in three women takes this step. The author of the own initiative report, Licia Ronzulli MEP (EPP, Italy) considers it necessary that “Europe takes action in member states that have not yet demonstrated their ability to promote educational and professional mobility”. This draft resolution will be put to the vote by MEPs during the June plenary and calls for member states to introduce provisions on the protection of women's rights in the context of professional mobility in their employment strategies. It also calls for attention to focus on migrant women workers, particularly on women who move to a different member state to follow their partners joining the job market and. The report highlights the importance of lifelong learning, as well as the need to establish a better balance between working and private life. Ronzulli concluded that “it is essential to ensure women's maternity rights, the introduction of measures to improve the reconciliation between work and family life and to create better conditions for professional advancement and wages exclusively based on merit”.
