Brussels, 02/04/2013 (Agence Europe) - European Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Füle called on all branches of the Georgian government, on 27 March, to keep up the pace of judicial reform. During his meeting with the chairman of the Georgian Supreme Court, Konstantin Kublashvili, Füle welcomed the “constructive steps being taken to implement judicial reforms” and stressed the importance which the EU attaches to the “depoliticisation of the judiciary” in Georgia. He went on to point out that the EU continues to advise the Georgian government on judicial reform and, in February, appointed a special adviser for legal and constitutional reform and human rights in Georgia (see EUROPE 10801). The EU also provides a team of experts led by a senior judge to work with the Georgian Ministry of Justice on issues pertaining to criminal justice and human rights. The EU, together with the Council of Europe, is working with Georgia on prison reform. (CG/transl.jl)
