EXTERNAL ACTION / (ae) bahrain

02/04/2013 (Agence Europe) - S&D calls on UN to take action. On 28 March, the European Parliament's S&D Group called on the United Nations “to act on Bahrain to press the government to put an end to the massive detentions and violence”. “Police brutality against students, democracy activists and protesters is increasing and this is unacceptable. It will only foster continuous violence and instability in the country, as the indignation rises among the population”, said Ana Gomes. In Richard Howitt's opinion, although “the national dialogue process must be genuine and inclusive, without the release of the prisoners of conscience (…) a true reconciliation process may not move forward”. He regretted the fact that the proposed reforms of the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry have still not been implemented. Dozens of people have been arrested and wounded during the recent demonstrations. (CG/transl.fl)
