Rail rapporteurs appointed and work on 4th package under way

Brussels, 21/03/2013 (Agence Europe) - The Parliamentary committee for transport has confirmed all the rapporteurs involved in the legislative procedure on the 4th railway package, a flagship project in the portfolio of European Commissioner for Transport Siim Kallas but one which has also created much controversy. Saïd El Khadroui MEP (Belgium), transport spokesman for the Socialists, will certainly have the toughest job. He will take on sensitive issues, such as rail governance and the liberalisation of domestic passenger traffic (revision of Directive 2012/34). Another Belgian, and also a delegation leader, Mathieu Grosch (EPP), will take the reins on the revision of public service obligations, Regulation 1370/2007, which is also related to the liberalisation of domestic passenger traffic. The other rapporteurs are Roberts Zile (ECR, Latvia), in charge of revising Regulation 881/2004 establishing the European Rail Agency, Michael Cramer (Greens/EFA, Germany), responsible for revising the directive on safety (2013/0031), Izaskun Bilbao (ALDE, Spain), in charge of the revision of the inter-operability directive (2013/0030) and Jaromir Kohlicek (GUE, Czech Republic) who will be overseeing the repeal of the regulation on standardising the accounts of railway companies (1192/69).
