11/02/2013 (Agence Europe) - Catherine Ashton deplores execution of Afzal Guru. High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton learned “with regret” of the execution of Afzal Guru in India on 9 February. He had been sentenced to death for the attacks in 2001 against the parliament in New Delhi, the Lok Sabha. “Regardless of the heinous nature of these crimes, the EU reiterates its principled opposition to the death penalty under all circumstances and calls India to re-establish a moratorium on executions”, Ashton stated in her press release. She recalled that the EU supports India in its fight against terrorism. “We look forward to continuing to work together on this area”, she added. (CG/transl.fl)
