Brussels, 30/01/2013 (Agence Europe) - On 30 January, the Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy, Tonio Borg, announced the names of the winners of the fourth European journalism health prize. A special prize on smoking cessation was also awarded. "All four journalists awarded tonight pull no punches (…). The common thread in the winning articles is that they confront uncomfortable issues for which debate is needed at EU level". First prize (€6000) went to Petr Tresnak of "Respekt" magazine (Czech Republic) for his article "Adventures in Ward 14" (set in a hospital psychiatric facility), second prize (€2500) to Ailbhe Jordan of "Medical Independent" magazine (Ireland) for the article "Is Screening a Waste of Cash?" (debate on the cost effectiveness of cancer screening, particularly breast cancer), third prize (€1500) went to Daniela Cipolloni of "Oggi Scienza" magazine (Italy) for her article "All Those Lies Spread by Umbilical Cord Banks" (controversial practices of umbilical cord banks). The special prize (€3000) was awarded to Tobias Zick, writing for NEON magazine, for his article "Thick Air", which looks at how smoking has lost its "cool" image in Germany. (IL/transl.fl)
