10/01/2013 (Agence Europe) - Ashton concerned by execution of Rizana Nafeek. High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton said she was “deeply dismayed” by the information that Sri Lankan Rizana Nafeek was executed in Saudi Arabia the same day, and when Nafeek was probably a minor at the time of the deeds of which she was accused. Nafeek was condemned to death in June 2007, a punishment that was upheld in October 2010, for her murder of a baby that she was taking care of. “On numerous occasions, the EU had called for the execution to be commuted and had asked the authorities to exercise all their powers in order to grant her relief from the death penalty”, Ashton said, repeating the EU's opposition to the death penalty.
