Brussels, 07/01/2013 (Agence Europe) - On Sunday 6 January, Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt said that Turkey's accession to the EU is not in the bag. He told AFP during a trip to Turkey that nothing is certain in this world and nothing is certain in life. He added, however, that he believes Turkey will join the EU but he did not know when. Bildt supports Turkey becoming a member of the EU but he said that this requires effort from both sides - it requires a continuous process of reforms in Turkey and it requires a continuous open attitude on the part of the European Union. Bildt hopes that the negotiations will be accelerated in 2013 thanks to some positive signs which must be built on. He told AFP that opposition to Turkey's accession exists in some countries but that all countries agree, with very few exceptions, that they should conclude the negotiations. France and the Republic of Cyprus are unilaterally blocking the opening of negotiation chapters. (CG/transl.fl)
