EXTERNAL ACTION / (ae) mali

21/12/2012 (Agence Europe) - Security Council gives conditional green light. On Thursday 20 December, the Security Council of the United Nations gave its conditional green light for the deployment of an African force to recapture North Mali. Resolution 2085, which was adopted unanimously and the draft form of which was submitted by France, authorises the deployment of the 3,300 soldiers of the International Support Mission in Mali (AFISMA), but this green light came with conditions - political dialogue with the armed groups of the North which reject terrorism and are prepared to take part in a national union government; the re-establishment of constitutional order; and elections to be held by April of next year. This third resolution of the Security Council on the crisis in Mali was a prerequisite to the potential deployment, in Bamako, of the EU mission EUTM Mali to support the training and restructuring of the Mali Armed Forces (see EUROPE 10749 and 10748).
