Brussels, 12/12/2012 (Agence Europe) - S&D MEP Robert Goebbels (of Luxembourg) says that a decision by the European Summit to appoint Euro Commissioner Olli Rehn as the president of Eurogroup would be the smartest way of improving governance of the eurozone. In a press release, he said that Rehn as chair of Eurogroup would boost cohesion with the European Commission, reducing the number of people claiming to speak on behalf of Eurogroup and hence some of current cacophony. He points out that in October 2011, the European Summit said that a decision would need to be taken at the end of Jean-Claude Juncker's term of office about whether the next Eurogroup chair should be elected by Eurogroup or be a full-time post based in Brussels. At the most recent meeting of eurozone finance ministers, Juncker asked to be replaced by the end of January (see EUROPE 10744). The eurozone governance question might be discussed at the European Summit although a special meeting of the heads of eurozone countries has not yet been scheduled. (MB/transl.fl)
