Brussels, 24/10/2012 (Agence Europe) - On 24 October, the European Commission requested that the European Court of Justice impose a fine on Belgium because the country, despite the decision made by the ECJ in March 2011, had still not correctly applied the EU regulation on telecommunications at the time of the granting of the “must carry” status for radio broadcasting content. The “must carry” system compels cable distributors and telecommunication operators (when they are used by a significant number of consumers as the main means for receiving radio or television broadcasts) to retransmit specific radio and television channel services. The Commission is proposing the payment of a fine based on €5397 a day for the period from the first ECJ ruling to its second ruling and that a fine of €31251.20 is imposed for every day following the second ruling until Belgium complies.
