Council supports European consumer agenda

Brussels, 11/10/2012 (Agence Europe) - The European Consumer Agenda was proposed by the Commission to increase consumer confidence in the internal market by providing consumers with the means to take action and subsequently give a boost to growth and make an important contribution to the EUROPE 2020 strategy. The Council of the EU therefore considers swift implementation important.

EU27 ministers meeting at the Competitiveness Council gave their backing on 11 October in Luxembourg to the four objectives on this agenda (see EUROPE 10706 and EUROPE 10618), particularly the drawing up of an ambitious list of measures to implement by 2014. The political resolution adopted by the Council underlines the need to include consumer issues in all crucial sectoral sectors (foodchain, energy, travel, transport, sustainable products, and digital and financial services).

It draws the attention of heads of state and government to the necessity of going further in the measures taken to create a single borderless retail market, including e-commerce and using all tools and instruments appropriate to this end. The European Commission and member states are called on to work together to efficiently implement this agenda. (AN/trans/fl)
