Country progresses but still some way to go

Brussels, 11/10/2012 (Agence Europe) - In its communication, published on 10 October, on the main findings of the comprehensive monitoring report on Croatia's state of preparedness for the EU, the European Commission says that Zagreb is completing its alignment with the acquis communautaire but that additional work is needed in some areas such as competition policy, justice and fundamental rights, freedom and security. Croatia also has to restructure its shipbuilding industry and better manage its external borders. Progress has to be made on fundamental rights and strengthening the rule of law, by improving public administration and the judicial system, and by fighting against corruption and organised crime.

“The Croatian authorities should take all necessary measures to ensure that the country is fully prepared for membership by 1 July 2013”, the Commission states. The Commission will present a final monitoring report on Croatia's accession preparations in spring 2013. (CG/transl.fl)
