Brussels, 19/09/2012 (Agence Europe) - There has been a record amount in EU solidarity to the Emilia-Romagna region following the terrible earthquakes that struck the region this spring. €670 million has been granted under the European Union Solidarity Fund (EUSF). This is the highest amount granted since the fund was set up in 2002. The European Commissioner responsible for regional policy, Johannes Hahn, explained that the Commission is proposing this contribution to cover, at least partially, the expenses caused by the damages. There were two earthquakes last May, one of which was almost 6° on the Richter scale. According to the Italian authorities, this caused damages of more than €13.5 million. The Commissioner considers that the EUSF contribution will be backdated to help this region bear this financial burden and will cover the huge costs of restoring essential infrastructure, providing shelter and rescue services as well as protecting the cultural heritage of the region. Nonetheless, payments cannot be made before the end of the year or the beginning of next year because the budgetary authority, Council and European Parliament still need to validate this contribution. Asked about Italy's request for EUSF assistance, following deep snowfalls last February, the Commissioner declared that the Commission was currently examining the case but emphasised that, “as you know, snow melts at some point”.
