Stefan Füle calls on country to continue its reforms

Brussels, 07/09/2012 (Agence Europe) - During the visit to Brussels of the new minister of Montenegro for foreign affairs and European integration, Nebojsa Kaludjerovic, on Thursday 6 September European Commissioner Stefan Füle called on Montenegro to remain focused on its European agenda and to continue with its widespread reforms, when parliamentary elections are taking place on 14 October. Stating that “the opening of accession negotiations in June was a fair recognition of the impressive progress Montenegro has made in the reform process”, Füle said that these negotiations are a “very demanding” process. “Montenegro needs to continue with the same commitment. Constitutional reform, overall strengthening of judicial independence, and the fight against corruption and organised crime are among the most important issues”, he added, also stressing regional and bilateral issues.

Füle and Kaludjerovic agreed on the need to keep the reform process dynamic, “not only for Montenegro to move closer to its objective of joining the EU”, but also “to highlight the credibility of the enlargement process and to be of benefit to the whole region”, the commissioner said.
