04/09/2012 (Agence Europe) - Mergers: GKN/Volvo Aero. On 3 September 2012, the European Commission cleared the planned acquisition of Volvo Aero of Sweden (a subsidary of the Swedish car company that makes aircraft engines, gas turbine components and other components for industry) by its rival GKN of the UK (products and technology for aircraft and vehicles). Both companies produce a range of components for aircraft engines including fan cases and turbine exhaust cases (TECs). The Commission's investigation showed that the transaction would not raise competition concerns on either the market for fan cases or the market for TEC given the presence of other manufacturers of these products and the capability of many customers to manufacture them in-house and therefore authorised the deal, which was notified to the Commission on 27 July 2012.
