Brussels, 22/08/2012 (Agence Europe) - On 10 August, in the context of an anti-trust probe, the European Commission invited the parties interested to take a stance on commitments proposed by Rio Tinto Alcan to address concerns that it may have infringed EU antitrust rules through abuse of dominant position by contractually tying its leading AP aluminium smelting technology to aluminium smelter equipment it supplies, namely pot tending assemblies (PTAs). To address these concerns, Rio Tinto Alcan has offered to modify its agreements to enable the licensees of the AP aluminium smelting technology to choose other suppliers whose DPA meet certain technical specifications. If the market test confirms that the proposed commitments remedy competition concerns, then the Commission may make the commitments legally binding on Rio Tinto Alcan.
