Brussels, 31/07/2012 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission decided on Tuesday 31 July to allocate a further €22 million in aid to help those most affected by the humanitarian crisis in the Horn of Africa. The money will help build the resilience of at least one million Kenyans and Somalis. This new aid takes the Commission's humanitarian aid contribution to the Horn of Africa to €335 million since the start of the famine emergency. The funds will be channelled through the SHARE (Supporting Horn of Africa Resilience) initiative, which has a budget of €250 million over two years (2012-2013), and measures will be implemented by ECHO's partner humanitarian organisations on the ground.
SHARE is one of the main vehicles for EU assistance to the Horn of Africa and allows the Commission to direct its efforts at removing the root causes of food crises through its support for investment in agricultural and livestock production, nutrition, animal health, water supply and management of natural resources.
