The European External Action Service (EEAS) tweeted a birthday greeting to Nelson Mandela on Wednesday 18 July. “18 July 1918… the birth of a great man who devoted his life to the service of humanity - Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela - and what better day to acknowledge the former South African President's contribution to peace and freedom than 18 July itself”, the EEAS added, noting that, in November 2009, the UN General Assembly had declared this day “Nelson Mandela International Day”. European Parliament President Martin Schulz also sent his congratulations via Twitter, stating: “I admire achievements and dedication to the people of South Africa and to the continent”. UK Foreign Secretary William Hague thanked Mandela “for your inspiration to everyone striving for freedom around the world”. (CG/transl.rt)
