Ashton in Egypt to repeat EU support for transition

Brussels, 18/07/2012 (Agence Europe) - EU High Representative Catherine Ashton will travel to Egypt on Thursday 19 July to restate the EU's support for democratic transition in the country and to discuss recent political developments. “The EU will continue to do all it can to support the peaceful and orderly transition to a civilian and democratic government in Egypt”, Ashton said before leaving. The EU, fully aware of the many challenges ahead, will “continue to stand by Egypt and its people in their quest for both deep democracy and economic opportunity”, she added, highlighting women's key role.

Ashton said: “Egypt is a key player in the Arab world, and a full and reliable partner in international affairs”. “Steps forward in Egypt are crucial for democracy-building in the Middle East and North Africa”, she continued.

During her visit, the high representative will meet new President Mohamed Morsi and Head of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces Field Marshall Mohamed Hussein Tantawi. She will also deliver the keynote address at the EU-organised conference “Egyptian Women: The Way Forward”. (FB/transl.rt)
