Brussels, 17/07/2012 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 17 July during International Justice Day, Martin Schulz, urged, “all countries which have not yet signed and ratified the Rome Statute to do so without delay and to show a genuine commitment to uphold and support the international justice and the rule of law”.
He also called on the European External Action Service, member states and the European Commission to continue their efforts to promote the universal ratification of the Rome Statute. Martin Schulz underlined the strong support of the European Parliament for, “a comprehensive system of international justice which aims to end impunity against genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes when justice cannot be delivered at the domestic level” and pointed out that the European Parliament, “is and will remain a strong ally of the International Criminal Court in its search for complementarity and universality”.
Schulz also congratulated Tunisia on its accession to the Rome Statute and said that he hoped that all other countries in Northern Africa and the Middle East will follow its example. (CG/trans/fl)
