Commission to claw back €426 million from member states

Brussels, 22/06/2012 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission called on member states on Friday 22 June to repay €436 million in unduly spent agricultural policy funds. Having already recovered €10 million, €426 million will return to the EU budget because of non-compliance with EU rules. In view of the financial crisis and the pressure being felt by some member states, the countries having to pay back money will be able, subject to certain conditions, to delay reimbursement of disallowed funds for up to 18 months. Among the corrections, €131.3 million is to be recovered from Spain and €98.9 million from Italy for plantation of vine without the (re-)plantation rights. Greece will have to repay €21.3 million for the same reason but, because it is under financial assistance, it will be able to delay reimbursement. In addition to that sum, Greece will have to repay €71.5 million for weaknesses in controls on dried grapes and €11.6 million for the lack of the sugar production and storage control system. €62.9 million will be recovered from France for deficiencies in controls of the bovine premiums. Poland will have to pay back €13.3 million (financial impact: €13.1 million) for a deficient sanctioning system and non-defined Good Agricultural and Environment Conditions (GAEC) with regard to cross-compliance.
