Arrest of four members of ICC

Brussels, 20/06/2012 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 19 June, Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, stated that “the EU is following with great attention and concern the arrest and detention of four staff members of the International Criminal Court (ICC) held in Libya since 7 June”. She said that she was pleased to see that the ICC staff received the visit of their ambassadors and of the ICC representative, and called for all efforts to be made to secure the immediate release of the detained individuals. Ashton pointed out that the legal obligation of Libya under the UN Security Council's resolution 1970 (2011) was to co-operate fully with and provide any necessary assistance to the ICC pursuant to that resolution, and to recognise the privileges and immunities of ICC staff. “Libya should address concerns about the conduct of staff of the ICC within the ICC legal framework”, insisted Ashton. She also underlined the need to grant full consular access consistent with the obligations under the Vienna Convention. (LC/transl.fl)
