Commission queries Finnish broadband project

Brussels, 19/06/2012 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 19 June, the European Commission opened an in-depth investigation on the project of the Finnish telecoms regulator, FICORA, to not impose price regulation on broadband markets. FICORA intends not to impose price regulation on telecoms operators who provide access to their network for alternative operators.

According to the Commission, lack of proper pricing regulation would leave the way open for dominant operators to fix high prices for access to their networks. Such a decision could have a negative impact on competition and the future development of fibre and copper networks, when the price for access to the fibre local loop is already high, the Commission states. “We need to ensure competition for companies offering broadband services”, commented Neelie Kroes, European Commissioner for the Digital Agenda.
