Parliament calls for more cooperation on cyber-security

Brussels, 13/06/2012 (Agence Europe) - In a resolution adopted at its plenary session in Strasbourg on 12 June, by 573 votes in favour, 90 against and 26 abstentions, the European Parliament is arguing in favour of a European strategy and international cooperation on the internet, to be set in place by the end of 2012, in order to fight cyber-crime effectively. “The objectives of the digital agenda cannot be achieved without a reliable and resilient internet”, commented rapporteur Ivailo Kalfin (S&D, Bulgaria).

The MEPs call on the European Commission to report any attempted cyber-attack in sensitive sectors such as energy, transport, information and communication technologies or financial services to a single structure, within which all bodies tasked with cyber-security issues, such as ENISA and CERT (Community Emergency Response Team), would work together. They also call on them to work on a legislative proposal to classify cyber-attacks such as online fraud or spear phishing in the category of criminal acts. As cyber-crime knows no national boundaries, the MEPs are calling for more cooperation between the European Union and its international partners, in order to develop responses at a global level.
