Strasbourg, 11/06/2012 (Agence Europe) - Following an invitation issued from the Libyan Electoral Commission, the European Union is to send an assessment team to the general election due, to take place in Libya on 19 June, EU High Representative Catherine Ashton announced on Friday 8 June. The team, to be led by MEP Alexander Graf Lambsdorff (ALDE, Germany), will undertake a comprehensive assessment of the forthcoming electoral process. It will be made up of 21 experts; it will be deployed gradually throughout the country from 8 June and will remain in Libya until completion of the whole electoral process. “The forthcoming elections represent a crucial step in the ongoing transition”, Ashton said, stating that the EU “will continue to support the Libyan people in this process and in realising the objective to establish a new Libya based on respect for democratic values, on stability and prosperity for all”.
