Brussels; 04/06/2012 (Agence Europe) - The ACP-EU joint parliamentary assembly is calling for an increase in expenditure on agriculture, for better support to small farming concerns (especially those run by women and young farmers) and for the fight against speculation on foodstuffs as key elements of the fight for food security in the ACP countries.
This call was expressed in a resolution adopted on 30 May in Horsens by MEPs and ACP elected representatives on the volatility of prices, the functioning of world markets in agricultural products and their effect on food security in the ACP countries. Drawn up by David Martin (S&D, UK) and Eunice Kazembé (elected representative of Malawi), the resolution underlines that flexible safety nets could offer producers a more stable market environment, whilst EU trade barriers should progressively be dismantled.
