EXTERNAL ACTION / (ae) mongolia

04/06/2012 (Agence Europe) - EU closely monitoring case of former president accused of corruption. The spokesperson of EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton said on 1 June that the EU was keeping a close eye on developments in the case of Nambaryn Enkhbayar, who was the president of Mongolia from 2005 to 2009. Enkhbayar has been accused of corruption and the EU says it hopes “this case will be treated transparently and with full respect for democratic principles, the rule of law and human rights”. Restating its “full support to the strengthening of democratic processes” in Mongolia, the EU calls the country “a new and vibrant democracy” which shares many values with the EU. According to Amnesty International, the detention of Enkhbayar, who was arrested on 13 April then released under caution, would seem to be arbitrary and in breach of human rights. (CG/transl.rt)
