Free trade stimulates growth, job creation and wages

Brussels, 23/05/2012 (Agence Europe) - Governments that promote the opening up of markets and are resistant to protectionism have much more chance of stimulating inclusive economic growth and creating quality jobs, according to a study presented during the annual OCDE Forum on 23 May. This study was carried out under the auspices of the ICICE, which brings together ten international organisations including the OCDE, World Bank, WTO, UNCTAD and the ILO. Based on 14 studies carried out since 2000, the Policy Priorities for International Trade and Jobs study concludes that trade plays an independent and positive role on wages and that protectionism and discriminatory trade measures do not protect jobs. On the contrary, closing off markets could stifle growth and subject labour markets to additional pressures, claims the OCDE in a press release. (EH/transl.fl)
