08/05/2012 (Agence Europe) - Kalcin hails fine performance of pro-accession parties in election. European Parliament rapporteur for Serbia Jelko Kalcin (ALDE) on Monday 7 May welcomed the “strong showing of political parties which push for Serbia's integration into the EU” in the Serbian general election on 6 May. He said, too, that he hoped parliamentary parties would soon begin talks on forming the next coalition government, “which will take up a reformist, pro-EU agenda”. No matter the make-up of the new government, “Belgrade needs to continue the dialogue with Pristina as soon as possible and to implement the agreements that have already been reached”, he added, stating that Serbian leaders need to work hard on establishing a genuine rule of law in the country. The Democratic Party of out-going President Boris Tadic, a pro-European, and the populist nationalist Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) whose leader, Tomislav Nikolic, is pro-European topped the voting, each receiving around 24% of votes cast (see EUROPE 10609).
