Brussels, 27/04/2012 (Agence Europe) - So far, there is no justification to reactivate export refunds in the dairy sector, and there is no question of increasing the reference and intervention prices for butter and powdered skimmed milk. It was in this way that the European agriculture commissioner on Thursday 26 April swept away Poland's request for new management measures in the milk and dairy products sector. The Commission will continue to closely follow developments on this market and stand ready to act, if needs be. After two years of particularly good prices, these have now started to drop. This fall coincides with the seasonal tendency usually observed in prices paid by producers, the Commission explains. Butter prices have seen the sharpest drop. Poland, supported by Spain, Hungary, Portugal, Lithuania and Latvia, believe however that the current intervention price is too low. These countries have called on the Commission in vain to bring back export refunds and an increase in intervention prices for butter and powdered skimmed milk. (LC/transl.fl)
