Brussels, 27/04/2012 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 26 April, the UN Security Council began discussion on a draft resolution prepared by the United States for putting an end to hostilities between the two Sudans. The EU's relief was tangible when it learned that a roadmap had been adopted on Tuesday 24 April by the African Union Peace and Security Council with a view to ending the tension between the two countries and bringing them back to the negotiating table. The EU calls on both sides to implement the roadmap without delay, saying they have its full support in this.
In a press release, Catherine Ashton's spokesman underlines that the high representative for foreign affairs and security policy “welcomes the adoption” of the roadmap, which sets out a series of measures to be taken by Khartoum and Juba, including the immediate cessation of hostilities, withdrawal of each army to its own side of the border, cessation of support to rebel groups operating in the territory of the other state, and implementation of the agreements already entered into. The roadmap was adopted the day after the meeting of EU27 foreign affairs ministers who called on both countries to resume dialogue (see EUROPE 10600). (AN/transl.jl)
