Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Füle met Sakharov Prize winner and independent member of the Turkish national assembly Leyla Zana on Wednesday 18 April. They discussed constitutional reform, political reforms, human rights freedom of expression and protection of minorities in Turkey. Füle said he hoped the new civil constitution would “provide a basis for further progress regarding the respect for fundamental rights and freedoms in Turkey” and “provide a useful and sustainable framework for further work on the democratic opening”, particularly with regard to the Kurdish issue. The two also discussed the forthcoming 4th judicial reform package which provides for further reforms in the area of freedom of expression and the media. The commissioner highlighted the Commission's concern about the continuing detentions and arrests of journalists and intellectuals. (CG/transl.rt)
