Brussels, 04/04/2012 (Agence Europe) - Despite earlier announcements to the contrary, the European Commission will not be making a detailed assessment of Spain's budget plans for 2011 this week. A spokesperson for Euro Commissioner Olli Rehn said on Wednesday 4 April that the assessment would take a few days and would not be completed until after Easter. He said that on Tuesday 2 April, the Spanish government had submitted details of the budget to the Commission after presenting them to the Spanish parliament. The spokesperson said the Commission was delighted to have received the information although it only covered central, and not regional, government. The draft budget aims to cut the country's deficit from 8.5% to 5.3% of GDP by making additional savings of €27 billion (see EUROPE 10587). (MB/transl.fl)
