Füle stresses importance of Assembly

Brussels, 04/04/2012 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 3 April, European Commissioner for Enlargement and the Neighbourhood Policy Stefan Füle reiterated the importance of the Euronest parliamentary assembly in the Eastern Partnership. “There are high expectations of your contribution to the recommendation of the Eastern Partnership” and its reinforcement, stressed the commissioner before the members of the Assembly in Baku, adding that Euronest had been “far more than the last institution, established by virtue of the partnership. It is a tool to move forward democratisation and exchange best practices between the members of parliament of the partner countries and members of the EU.

Pointing out that Euronest's contribution is vital for the implementation of the objectives and assessment of the progress of the partnership, Füle stressed that it is “very important for this assembly to be efficient and effective” and welcomed the measures taken to “allow it to carry out vigorous parliamentary debates on the positive agenda of the Eastern Partnership”. He added that the assembly must promote the democratic values on which the partnership is founded and called on the governments to undertake “painful but necessary” reforms. (CG/transl.fl)
