Brussels, 02/04/2012 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 29 and Friday 30 March, European Socialists travelled to Tunis to appeal for a progressive agenda to be developed in support of Arab countries that have chosen democracy and require decisive European support. In a press release, the S&D Group at the European Parliament stated: “Economic development is essential for successful democratic transition. This is why we need to work together for the economic integration of the European markets with those of the southern Mediterranean countries, in addition to strengthened partnerships.”
Hannes Swoboda, the leader of the S&D Group at the European Parliament, expressed the Socialists' “total support” for “Arab citizens who have fought and are fighting for freedom, human dignity and democracy in their countries”. He added that “we are here in Tunis to demonstrate a determination to work hand-in-hand” with these countries and parties that are particularly close to us, “to help meet the challenges of the Arab Spring successfully, which are unquestionably the development of a solid democracy in all southern Mediterranean countries”. In his speech, he paid homage to the Tunisian people who “gave the boost to the uprising against repression. The heroic revolt of the Tunisian people, at the source of the Arab Spring, shook up all the different repressive regimes.” He also praised the, “pragmatic approach” of the Tunisian government, which is made up of a coalition headed by the Islamists of the Ennahdha and of which Ben Jaafar's party is a member, an ally of the Socialists. Ennahdha has given in to public pressure by accepting that no reference to Sharia law be included in the constitution being prepared, adoption of which is envisaged at the end of the year. This will pave the way to general elections next March or April.
Swoboda also emphasised the role of women in the fight for fundamental rights. He said: “Women have more rights and opportunities today but it is just the beginning. We need to continue with this and strengthen women's rights in Arab countries.” He also appealed for a greater opening up in Europe: “As a group, we have supported several initiatives such as, for example, Erasmus for Maghreb or the visa facility for university exchanges and mobility.” He also considers that the Arab Spring has to lead to social justice and economic prosperity for the entire Arab population. He affirmed that the EU must help towards the objective of economic prosperity. Swoboda concluded that “another vision is required for a genuine partnership promoting democracy, respect for human rights, social justice and economic prosperity for the whole people”. (FB/transl.fl)
