Brussels, 29/03/2012 (Agence Europe) - On 29 March, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) announced that it intended to submit a strong pitch for acquiring a Top Level Domain name, TLD, “. radio” for the world radio community. The president of the EBU, Jean-Paul Philippot stated that “the EBU's acquisition of this TLD will serve a greater good, bringing tangible benefits to radio broadcasters and listeners everywhere”. This application benefits from the support of international broadcasting unions and other organisations affected by this initiative. If the EBU obtained the domain name, it would be able to create an internet platform in which radio bodies throughout the world could collaborate. The increased pace of their network under a single “roof” would strengthen the choice of radio in the media whose expansion could increase with new radiophonic services, explains the EBU. So far, there are only 21 top-level domain names (including “.com”, “. org”, “.eu” and “.net” and national domain names (“.fr ”, “.ch ”, “.de ”, etc). ICANN, the authority that manages and regulates internet addresses worldwide, has called on stakeholders to submit their requests for new domain names before 12 April this year. (IL/transl.fl)
