SECTORAL POLICY / (ae) climate

12/03/2012 (Agence Europe) - Aviation ETS, trade war. On Monday 12 March, Airbus and eight airlines in a state of agitation (Air Berlin, Air France, British Airways, Iberia, Lufthansa, MTU Aero Engines, Safran and Virgin Atlantic) jointly called on David Cameron, François Fillon, Angela Merkel and Marioano Rajoy to take action to prevent escalation of the trade dispute with China, which has suspended its orders with Airbus, and with the other countries which challenging the inclusion of aviation in the emissions trading scheme (ETS). The move comes immediately after the Environment Council which, on 9 March, saw all 27 member states back the Commission in its defence of the aviation ETS and its call for an ICAO agreement to reduce air carriers' CO2 emissions, to the great satisfaction of Climate Action Commissioner Connie Hedegaard.
